Shogi
Six-piece handicap
The stronger player gives up rook, bishop, both lances and both knights — and moves first.
What is different here
Rokumai-ochi, the six-piece handicap, leaves uwate with a king, two golds, two silvers and nine pawns. Nothing on his side of the board jumps, slides or reaches further than one square.
These are the odds for a first real game against a much stronger player, and they are meant as a lesson rather than a contest: shitate is being taught how to build an attack and finish it.
Eight grades or thereabouts. If shitate wins two of these in a row, move up to four-piece.
- Removed: gote’s rook 8b, bishop 2b, lances 9a and 1a, knights 8a and 2a.
- Gote — uwate — moves first.
- Uwate has only kings, golds, silvers and pawns: nothing fast at all.
- Shitate should learn the standard attack here: rook, silver, pawn in hand, break.
- Every rule of the even game still applies, including nifu and uchifuzume.
