Xiangqi

Casual

The same game as the federation preset, except that a position repeated three times is simply a draw, so no game is ever decided by a chase ruling.

What is different here

Board, pieces, moves and win conditions here are identical to the federation preset. A stalemated player still loses, and the no-progress limit is still 120 half-moves without a capture.

The single change is repetition. Instead of asking who was forcing the position and penalising them, this preset uses the rule most people already know: if the same position occurs three times, the game is a draw. Nobody is judged, nobody forfeits.

This is the preset for a friendly game or a first game. Repetition rulings are the hardest part of competitive xiangqi to learn, and there is no reason to meet them on day one.

  • Identical board, pieces and moves to the federation preset.
  • Threefold repetition is a plain draw, whoever caused it.
  • No perpetual check ruling and no chase ruling.
  • Stalemate still loses for the player who cannot move.
  • No progress for 120 half-moves without a capture is a draw.
  • Draws also by agreement and by insufficient attacking material.
